A December Friday Night

I am driving home in a light snowstorm, perched up high in the pickup truck, a latte in hand and Van Morrison caterwauling away on cassette. As far as I can see in any direction there is snowy pine forest and white topped, blue mountains - gorgeous. Huge snowflakes are whirling everywhere, white sky, white air, the two lane highway banked on either side with a wide ribbon of pure white snow...white truck... Maybe I should turn on the headlights….

I am looking forward to my date tonight. Dave and I are going to meet some friends at the Lewis and Clark Tavern. This is one of only two restaurants open at this time of year for 30 miles in either direction – and only 2.5 miles from our house. A low, aging building located as it is in a wide spot on the side of the highway it seems to me a slightly dodgy looking establishment: dark wood, dark windows with several lighted beer signs in the front window. But we hear they have really, really good pizza, so we are going to give it a try!

At the appointed hour we pull up to the Tavern and park between two other pickup trucks. There are a total of 6 pickups, 1 small, beat-up, old red car and 1 nicer SUV parked in the gravel lot. The neon beer signs are glowing and through the front window I can see several patrons clothed in camouflage hunting garb sitting at the bar. The restrooms are located in a small green building off to the side of the property. I wonder to myself ‘What planet are we living on?’

In the end we had a very nice evening. The dining side of the establishment is very nicely done with wooden floors and rustic decorations. It was warm and friendly, and many drinkers and diners came and went throughout the evening. We enjoyed getting acquainted with our new friends Dixie and Gary. Next date we will probably try Lewis and Clark’s barbeque ribs – you should come out with us!
