Luverne's Lacks
Luverne was mine to drive into town Friday, as Dave was headed north to British Columbia for a ‘boy’s weekend’ with his good buddy. I am okay with that – I think I might be a bit of a truck girl at heart. Luverne is quite tall so I need to grab the steering wheel with both hands and haul myself up into the seat. She starts quickly and has both automatic transmission and steering, so what could be easier? I look carefully up and down the highway before pulling out of the driveway and put down the pedal; she accelerates a little more slowly than the Acura! As soon as I get up to highway speed I discover there is NO cruise control! You’ve got to be kidding me.
The on coming traffic today consists mostly of pickup trucks pulling horse trailers; hunters starting their weekend early. From seeing these guys around town in their standard uniform of camouflage fleece tops and bottoms and unshaven faces, I have decided that this is the ‘boy’s weekend’ Idaho style. Not for them the metro-sexual pursuits of cooking gourmet dinners, matching the wines and music.
My errands done, I load all my groceries onto the seat and floor of the cab, because Luverne lacks a tail gate, and haul myself up onto the seat one more time. On the way home I discover this truck has no radio reception and no CD player. There is a cassette player, but who has any of those anymore? I am mildly annoyed at these findings. To console and amuse myself on the quiet 30 mile commute I chomp my way through the better part of a bag of blue corn chips. They are very salty and very crispy. I crunch them in rhythm to the windshield wipers.
